GEI10 Session News: What's the Point in Recycling?
2018 has kicked off with the unfortunate news that following China's ban on the import of waste, the UK now has the added challenge of a plastic waste build-up to deal with. So, all the more reason to take a head-first dive into the tenth Green Events & Innovations Conference (GEI) schedule, which will take place in just two months time.GEI10 will bring together some of the most inspiring speakers, the most innovative ideas, and best practices for greener, happier and better festivals.To whet your appetite, we’re excited to announce that resources guru Ed Cook (Resources Futures) will be joining GEI on March 6th...Session: What’s the point of recycling?As well as giving us expert advice and some no-nonsense insights into the contemporary waste industry and what really happens to materials once they are removed from your event, Ed Cook will discuss a number of challenging topics related to waste, and will help us to decide exactly where, as event organisers, we should be focusing our efforts...Ed will look at the environmental impact of treating waste using a number of different methods, and the impact of litter on terrestrial and marine environments. He will ask the question why is litter bad? and will suggest ways in which event organisers can approach its management.Finally, Ed will also revisit the much-discussed topic of recycling statistics misreporting, which damages the credibility of the industry and recycling in general.Biography
Ed has worked in the recycling industry for over 15 years. As the Managing Director of Network Recycling he has overseen the clearance of more than 350 events across the UK - including Glastonbury, Bestival, London 2012 Olympics, and Secret Garden Party - over a six-year period.In the last five years, Ed has concentrated his efforts on waste consultancy, where he leads resource efficiency projects aimed at increasing the value of waste and identifying intervention points in the materials' value chain. Most recently, he has been concentrating on international development projects involving the global plastics markets, and also the development of technology for use in low- and middle-income economies.Ed has an MSc in Waste and Resource Management from Cranfield University, where he is also a guest lecturer in mechanical-biological treatment technology.
